Last September I visited Machico a couple of times. To surf, to swim, to go sightseeing, to start a stunning Vereda do Larano walk…
Here is our September 2019 gallery of the Machico beach and the interesting, though often overlooked by tourists, Pico do Facho viewpoint.
Machico Beach – pictures
The beach in Machico consists of two parts – natural (pebble) and artificial (sand). I wrote about this and many other beaches in Madeira in my latest post BEACHES IN MADERA – don’t forget to check it out.
Machico beach and the Pico do Facho Viewpoint are great spots for plane spotting.
For those who are wondering whether fall is a good time for swimming in Madeira – the answer is definitely yes! September and beginning of October are one of my favorite periods to visit Madeira.
From the Pico do Facho viewpoint (seen in the picture below) you will have an amazing view of Machico valley, Machico beach, and the Cristiano Ronaldo Airport …
… while if you turn around and look East, you will see the stunning Ponta de São Lourenço.
Pico do Facho isn’t the most popular viewpoint on Madeira, but I think it is probably because tourists are not aware of it. It’s definitely worth stopping at Pico do Facho for at least 5-10 minutes.
You can get to the top of the hill by car, which you can park right next to the observation deck.
Then, if you are brave enough, you can also climb some rocks for a truly panoramic view. However, be careful because it is often very, very windy there.
Pico do Facho, is a great spot for observing and photographing planes taking off and landing. Sometimes, you can also meet there whale and dolphin spotter, who are in contact with boats on the ocean and help them to get as close to animals as possible.
