Where to find the best street art in Madeira?

The most famous street art street in Madeira is probably the Rua de Santa Maria (Santa Maria Street) in the Old Town of Funchal. Interesting paintings, art installations, and murals can also be found in other Madeira towns. Which ones?

Funchal – Zona Velha (The Old Town)

A restaurant, Poncha bar, shops, and art galleries district with an amazing vibe. I have covered it already in detail in our post:

Funchal – Other districts

The Old Town isn’t the only district with murals. We will find a couple of beautiful paintings in other areas of the city:

There are, for example, at least two Ronaldo murals in Funchal. The player’s largest mural in his home region was painted by Richard Wilson. A smaller mural to commemorate Portugal’s victory in 2016 can be seen on the wall of the same garage as the “A Baleia” mural, very close to the (in)famous Farmer’s Market – Mercado dos Lavoradores.

Câmara de Lobos

In this lovely fishing village, you will find large murals and a number of colourful doors. Most of them can be found on São João de Deus Street and around the famous Poncha Bars: Bar Filhos D’ Mar and Sete Mares.

Some of them were decorated by volunteers with recycled materials. Tourists love photographing the beautiful TrashArt Sea Lion by the famous artist Bordalo II.

Artur Bordalo art

In Câmara de Lobos you will also find an installation by the famous Portuguese artist Artur Bordalo – Bordalo II. It is part of his famous collection of animals “The Big Trash Animals”. It presents a sea lion (Lobo Marinho) – the symbol of Câmara de Lobos, that gave a name to this town.

His second installation on Madeira is called “Plastic Mero” and you will be able to see it nearby the port and CR7 Museum:

His beautiful animals made of trash can be found wordwide, and they are all equally stunning:

Machico

When visiting the beach in Machico, it is worth checking out the streets of the Old Town, which are also covered in amazing murals:

If you like arts and crafts, I also encourage you to visit the RESTOCK art gallery in the Armazem do Mercado building, where in addition to free pop-up exhibitions you can also buy paintings by local artists and beautiful, handmade souvenirs at affordable prices. This place will definitely be on the way because it is located between the Old Town and the famous exotic fruit market Mercado dos Lavradores. Caravel Art Center is also a nice place to visit, highly recommended.
