The first weekend of the yearly Flower Festival is a very busy weekend for many kids in Madeira. On Sunday, many of them will be brought by their parents to the Flower Parade – to just watch it or to participate in it as beautifully dressed dancers and performers.

‘Muro da Esperança’ – Wall of Hope Ceremony in Funchal
What is ‘Muro da Esperança’ – Wall of Hope?
The Wall of Hope is one of the most important events of the annual Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) in Madeira. During this day, many preschools and school-age kids march with flowers in hands towards Praça do Município, where they leave flowers in the so-called “Wall of Hope” symbolizing the call for world peace.
It is an almost 30 years old tradition on Madeira Island. It is quite an unusual and unique event, and we had the opportunity to participate in it on May 4, 2019.

The ceremony ended with the official release of pigeons. It is estimated that over 1,000 children took part in the parade.
