Due to the pandemic, this year’s Madeira Flower Festival – Festa da Flor – not only takes place in the fall, but also changed its form. Here’s what it looks like this year as well as practical tips on getting your free tickets to flower dance performances.
Festa da Flor 2019
Last year’s parade, which we showed you and described in our post: Madeira Flower Parade 2019 was a pleasure to attend. This is a short summary:
We really enjoyed the entire Flower Festival 2019. We participated not only in the main parade, but also in the Children’s Parade called “Wall of Hope” as well as many other performances and concerts. We have visited the Flower Pavilion, the Flower Market many times and admired flower carpets and different flower arrangements. This year, however, the festival looked a bit different …

Festa da Flor 2020
The 2020 Flower Festival in Funchal was not canceled due to the pandemic, but postponed until September and merged with the Madeira Wine Festival.
Many elements of the festival have been preserved. There still were flower arrangements in the city center, you could still take photos with beautifully dressed “Flower Ladies” or visit the flower market.
In all these busy places, you were required to respect the social distancing rules and cover your nose and mouth.
What changed the most was the main Flower Parade itself. It was replaced with half-hour shows of dance groups on closed stages, which gave the organizers a bit more control.
Three main stages have been constructed in the city center. Before entering the tribunes, all spectators had their temperature checked, received disinfectant gels and were reminded about the requirement of wearing masks.
Small groups of spectators were separated from the rest; all tickets for the show were double or triple tickets, and there was always one empty seat in between.
If you are arriving in Madeira soon, you will still have a chance to watch the shows of the remaining dance groups. Here are the shows planned for the 19 & 20th of September 2020:
